Things to Note
Children do not require pencil cases in 6KC and should not bring their own equipment into school. (It is fine to bring gel pens, etc. for Golden Time on Fridays.)
Please provide a healthy snack and water bottle for your child each day – note that sweets are not permitted (other than on special occasions).
Correct uniform must be worn, including a school tie and appropriate footwear. No jewellery should be worn (other than one small pair of stud earrings only and/or a watch). False/gel nails or extensions are not permitted in school and hair should be smart.
Children’s mobile phones must be turned off whilst on the school site and must be given to Miss Carter at the beginning of the day to be stored securely.
In Year 6, children are permitted to leave the classroom alone at the end of the day. If you would prefer your child waited to be collected by a parent/carer, please let Miss Carter know.
At Home
Home Learning
In Year 6, children are expected to complete weekly homework. This consists of Maths and Grammar. Homework is set every Friday and must be handed in by 8.30am on Wednesday.
Reading
Every child has a banded/coloured reading book which matches their ability/fluency. This is the book which they read to adults in school – it can also be taken home to read with parents/carers. The book can be changed once it is finished. Children are also welcome to use the library to choose a reading for pleasure book – this is actively encouraged. Please try your best to read with your child regularly - even if your child is a fluent reader - and support him/her by asking questions to deepen their understanding of the texts. Any home reading should be recorded in your child’s reading record. (Please note that regular reading at home is an expectation as set out in our ‘Home School Agreement’.)
Spellings
Each week, we focus on a different spelling pattern in school. At the beginning of each term, children are given a spelling sheet to take home with a selection of words to practise that contain the focus pattern. Some of these words will be tested in school on Friday mornings. You will be notified via ClassDojo of the spelling pattern being focused on each week.
Times Tables
Most Fridays, children will complete an arithmetic paper. A large part of arithmetic is dependent on a secure knowledge of times tables and their corresponding facts. Please practise your child's timetables and division facts on a daily basis as this will hugely benefit their arithmetic speed.
PE
We have PE lessons twice per week on Mondays and Thursdays. Please ensure your child has their full PE kit in school – this consists of a white t-shirt, black shorts/joggers/leggings and a black jumper. Long hair must be tied back and all jewellery removed or covered for safety reasons.
SATs
Key Stage 2 SATs are national curriculum tests taken by Year 6 pupils in England to measure their academic attainment in English and Mathematics. In 2027, SATs will take place on the following dates:
Monday 10th May – English grammar, punctuation and spelling papers
Tuesday 11th May – English reading paper
Wednesday 12th May – Mathematics paper 1 (arithmetic) and paper 2 (reasoning)
Thursday 13th May – Mathematics paper 3 (reasoning)
More information will be given to you nearer the time.
